Mr Site Closing Down Highlights the Downside to Online Website Builders
Mr Site was recently closed down by their parent company TSO Hosts with notice of only one month. This left many small businesses without a website, many of whom had been with Mr Site for many years.
It highlights the downside to building a business website on a free/cheap online service. Whilst it may seem sensible to save a bit of money by using such a service, the sad fact is, they service provider basically has you over a barrel.
Because the sites are built on their own systems, it is often difficult to migrate them elsewhere. As was the case with Mr Site, it was not possible to migrate, and those that were lucky enough to have the time and resources were force to have their sites rebuilt.
Another downside is that these sites are often tied into domain registration offers. You may have received a "free" domain when registering with Mr Site, or a similar service. What they don't tell you is that they put a premium on domain renewals.
We recently transfered a number of domains from an Australian company (one that Microsoft them selves recommended). All was well for the first 12 months, but when it came to renewing the domain registration, they were charging over £80 for 12 months for a .co.uk domain. We change a maximum of £6.99 per year!
Services like Mr Site, Wix, Weebly etc have (had) a place in website design, but bear in mind that nothing in life is free. What you may save in website design, you'll pay for in ongoing hosting, domain costs. And the control you have over these sites is limited, should you need to migrate them on to your own platform.
If you lost your Mr Site website, all may not be lost! We have systems avaliable that may be able to recover an archived version of your website, and can rebuild it on the platform of your choosing, whether it be Wordpress, Joomla, or built as a Progressive Web App using the latest in coding techniques.
Give us a call or drop us a line. We can help recover your lost site!
